Shards of 16th\/17th century Bellarmine bottles, found on the Thames foreshore.<\/p>
They come from German stoneware bottles that were called Bartmann (bearded man) jugs in Germany for the gunning faces moulded onto their necks. These beardy fellows were intended to represent the Wild Man of folklore, but in England it is said they became known as Bellarmines because it was thought they resembled the Italian Cardinal Bellarmine, a staunchly Catholic priest who was also fervently anti drinking. It\u2019s said that Protestants enjoyed smashing the bottles to see his face in pieces. <\/span><\/p> Bellarmines were imported in vast quantities and used to hold ale, water and wine in houses and taverns all over London.
