Clay pipes are some of the most common finds on the Thames foreshore. They were thrown away in great numbers, but not after each smoke as some suggest. Clay pipes were bundled up and put into the fire to burn the tar out of the stems so that they could be reused and they were smoked until they were too short to provide a cool smoke, at which point they became 'nose warmers' and were thrown away. Many found their way directly into the river off ships, quaysides and from the many taverns along the river front. Others came in the waste and street sweepings that were used to build up and stabilise the foreshore.<\/span>
They don't date beyond around 1580, which is when tobacco was first brought to England from the New World, and can mostly be dated by size and shape.
